The Many Things Pilots Do for Fun When They Aren’t at Work

Jul 21, 2025 | The Business of Flight

At Avionco, we know a lot of pilots and we can tell you they are an interesting, intriguing bunch. Their skills and knowledge always amaze us and we recognize that they are a unique group. Most of the time we think of them soaring through the skies, navigating high-tech aircraft, and experiencing breathtaking views while they do so, but today we wondered what they do when they aren’t at work. What do they do for fun when out of the cockpit we asked ourselves.

Whether commercial, private, or corporate, we’ve learned that many have unique hobbies and interests that reflect their adventurous and disciplined lifestyles. Like anyone else, the interests of an individual pilot can range from art to quantum physics, but within the broad spectrum here are some of the things we uncovered:

Flying – Just for Fun!

Yup, we’re not kidding. It may seem ironic, but many pilots love flying so much they love to do it even in their free time. Instead of large commercial jets, some opt for small personal aircraft, vintage planes, or even engineless gliders. Many enjoy flying recreationally, participating in aerobatics, or taking friends and family up to the skies to share their interest. Others take the opportunity to explore aviation from different perspectives by learning to fly other aircraft types such as helicopters or seaplanes.

The Need for Speed

It’s not surprising that a pilot’s enjoyment of speed doesn’t stop at the runway. Just like we’ve seen in some movies, many pilots are drawn to experiences involving high performance cars, motorcycles, and even boat racing. Some participate in track days, where they push sports cars to their limits, while others enjoy off-road adventures like dirt biking or rally racing. Formula 1 and MotoGP attendance is also popular among aviation professionals who appreciate precision, engineering, and adrenaline-fueled competition.

Challenges and Adventure Below Sea Level

With all that time spent above the clouds, it may not surprise you that many pilots also love to explore the depths of the ocean. Scuba diving provides a completely different kind of adventure, one that offers relaxation and excitement in equal measure. Some also enjoy surface adventures such as jet skiing, sailing, or deep-sea fishing – anything that calls to their interest in vast, open spaces.

Exploring the World

Having a passion for travel is almost a given for pilots, and many like to explore global destinations on their own schedule versus that of their clients or airline. Whether it’s hiking in remote locations, discovering culinary delights, or immersing themselves in different cultures, many pilots take full advantage of their travel perks and wanderlust.

Aviation Photography and Videography

Aviation enthusiasts at heart, many pilots love capturing the beauty of flying through photography and videography so they can share their interest with others. Whether it’s shooting stunning sunsets from the cockpit, recording landings and takeoffs, or sharing aerial views on social media, pilots often use creative skills to document the magic of flight from their unique perspective.

Music and Creative Pursuits

While aviation requires discipline and precision, many pilots also have a creative side. Playing musical instruments, writing, painting, and photography are common interests that combine precision skills with creativity. Some combine technical interests with storytelling by creating aviation-themed YouTube channels, podcasts, or blogs to share their experiences with fellow enthusiasts.

Fitness and Wellness

Maintaining good health is crucial for pilots, given the demands of their job. Many make fitness a lifestyle habit and enjoy such pursuits as weight training, running, yoga, or martial arts. Some take up activities like rock climbing or mountaineering, combining adventure with physical challenge.

Family Time and Relaxation

Let’s not forget that many pilots also have families that they have to be away from for extended periods of time when working. For them, down time means family time to enjoy and nurture relationships. Whether it’s spending time with their children, enjoying backyard barbecues, or simply unwinding at home, they make the most of their off-duty moments by staying connected with loved ones.

We hope that today’s blog demonstrates that pilots may have unique skills in common,

but also a broad wealth of knowledge and interests.
